A collection of informal notes on post-beta development for V5.

This page does not supersede Trac, it's just a way to collect our informal notes as we go (especially after Skype sessions), so nothing gets forgotten about. 1. Bugs

1.1 (#624) Some of the videos in Circle of Life show up with strange red highlighting (esp the first SNU). (M).

1.2 (#625) 'Recent project' menu item doesn't appear to work at all. (M)

8/6: D: when there is an error on loading it will delete it from recent project list. Switch to Open and Save. (D to fix)

1.3 (#661) 'All Keywords' window does not show number of linked SNUs if there are more than 9. (F)

9/6: S: It looks like GG didn't upload changes, tentatively leaving this be for now. Will confirm again later.

1.3.1 (#726) Highlight numbers in All Keywords window (F)

1.4 Selecting "Get info" for several SNUs crashed k12a (where are the log-files?) (F)

8/6 Only happened once. D to investigate (F to send log file). Error logs to be hidden (ie dot files) but accessible via menu. Context menu is 'Open in SNU editor' and 'Get Info'.(Moved to 4.6)

1.5 S: (#727) new bug: In All Links window, mouse scroll wheel doesn't scroll unless on a header. 1.5.1 (15th, June, 2009, S) We cannot resize the "tools" windows. Is that intentional? It's bothersome.

1.6 F: (#708) (see m12h notes.rtf). Player: Sound of preview-movie keeps playing after the preview was clicked and actually disappeared.

1.7 F: (#728 marked as worksforsome) (see m12h notes.rtf). All Resources: I accidentally created a SNU, no idea how, now I can't delete it.

1.8 F: (#730) (see m12h notes.rtf). menu-items gone when SNU-editor-window is open. Possibility that the preview-text comes up on rollover (default) or is there all the time.

1.9 F: (#731) (see m12h notes.rtf). Player: Tooltips should not show up any more.

1.10 F: (see m12h notes.rtf). (#707) Cursor should change to hand-cursor on rollover of active area.

1.11 F: (#732 marked as worksforsome) (see m12h notes.rtf). Save-sound distorted.

1.12 F: (#721) (see m12h notes.rtf). Context menu should be: Open in SNU Editor | Create SNU, Get Info, Duplicate, Delete. (S)
1.12.1 under Get Info have Rename, and allow click then 300ms delay if mouse is still there to go into rename mode (all items in all resources) (S)

2.0.3 (#642, #643, #644, #645) project-setting: 'Maximum Links Per Search', expert-setting, default should be infinite (F)

2.1 (#646, #647, #648, #649) Preloaded Kfilm. K3 comes packaged with a preloaded KFilm called Circle of Life, and we think this has helped a lot of people get started making their own films and understanding how the application works. It will also be a familiar and welcome startpoint for people upgrading to K5 from K3. (M)

• Since Dave mentioned that it might be hard to get this to work in the same way with K5, and also that Florian thinks it might just be a nuisance for intermediate and advanced users to have to flush it out before starting to work with K5, I'm going to suggest that we bundle the Circle of Life with K5, but that it only loads into the application on request, eg File > Example (cf Processing). (M)
• 8/6: Accessible via Help Menu. G to add, D to hook up. Deletion should not f things up. D to tidy up flvs (ref 1.1)

2.2 (#650, #651, #652, #653, #654, #655, #656) Startscreen. This is a feature of K3 films, and one we'd like to have with K5, but it was completely overlooked by all us. It wouldn't be so important if it wasn't for the fact that startscreens from imported K3 films will all be lost unless we provide this feature.

• 8/6: D to add to project settings. Default 'on'. Add timeout option (if easy to do so). S+D+G to discuss.

2.2.1 "Startscreen" not "Splashscreen" (F)

2.2.2 (#710) Startscreen should only be still images (F)

2.3 (#657, #658, #659, #660) Black of the background in the SWF is not black. (F)

2.3.1 Make it so you can go into the HTML and change the swf background color for now

• 8/6: D+S to check it out. New feature to allow user to specify background colour in SWF?

3. Features - incomplete

3.1 (#702) The exported files need tidying up / reorganizing so as not to be so confusing/scary for a new user. (M)

• 8/6: D to deal with.

3.2 Korsakow project files should show up with the Korsakow icon (maybe with one or more of the cubes filled in red to distinguish from the application), and a special extension/suffix (ie not .xml). For example .ksw or .kor (M)

• I would suggest .knp (Korsakow Narrative Project) as the extension. I check with common file extensions and it's not in use. (GG)
• I like .kor best (as Korsakows don't necessarily don't have to be narrative) (F)
• 8/6: D and S to change extension only. .kor already in use. Not .knp. G to check repository for other ideas; send those to F.
• .krw is available, my favourite (F)
• (#715) 15/6 Agreed on .krw
• (#737 set as unnasigned for later consideration)It was agreed that making the project files claim the K icon might be for a later date

3.3 (#738 set as unnasigned for later consideration) When Exporting, the dialog should prompt the user to name a new exported project directory/folder, not to re/name the index.html file. (M)

• 8/6: D S G to investigate and harmonize.
• 15/6: Not priority. Leave as is.

3.4 (#664)(#712) The Default naming convention for SNUs should be simply to drop the extension/suffix (generally .mov). (M)

* 8/6: D and S to drop extensions from SNUs.

3.4.1 (#739) 15/6: G to add Red cube icon for SNUs. See 5.0.6.

3.5 The Berlin Sketches show several features, especially in the SNU editor, which are not yet implemented. Please confirm they are being dealt with. (M)

• (#622, #621, #620, #619) The preview text should appear screened over the clip, not as a tooltip (per Florian's notes). (GG) ( (2009-06-08) in progress)
• (#740 marked as unassigned for later) All resources: Open folders in new tabs? (F) (2009-06-08 : Do later)

3.6 (#741) Context-menu click should have "Duplicate" as an option to make another SNU based on the same media. (GG)
* 3.6.1 (#742) Copy Paste doesn't work right currently, and should be replaced by 'Duplicate' (15/6) (F)

• (#663) GG will look into green background on context menu on some platforms. (2009-06-08)

3.7 (#743) Do not use Cmd X for quitting. Remove 'Exit' from File pulldown menu on Mac.

4. Features - new

4.1 (tickets as below) When you select a SNU in the pool of everything All Resources, the associated keywords are highlighted in the keyword list. If you select more than one SNU, it highlights as such (eg shared are in red; non-shared are gray). (M)

• You should be able to context-click on the shared keywords to remove them from the currently selected resources in the Resource Explorer (GG) 15/6
  • (2009-06-16) This is dicey. Perhaps if it is clearly indicated that we're removing inbound keywords only (ones without any weird qualifiers and if/then?). Should clarify before ticketing.
• (#744 placed in unassigned for later) Put Keywords Tab in Resource Editor. When you select SNUS, the keywords get highlighted (grey if not all selected snus share, blue if they all share). Read Only. Later.
• (#745 placed in unassigned for later) Put Keywords Tab in Snu Editor, just showing in keywords and allowing the user to double click to move keywords into the last selected field (in or out). Later.

4.2 (#746 placed in unassigned for later)The "All Keywords" window should open by default when the a SNU editor window is opened.
4.2.1 (#747) The last selected in/out keyword field should have a visual highlight in SNU Editor
4.2.2 You should be able to insert the existing keywords in the IN and OUT keywords fields. (GG) This already appears to work
4.2.3 (#666) Color box next to In-Keyword and Out-Keyword in Snu Editor matching to Pool of Keywords

4.2.4 (#749) In the out keywords the default look for notation '>' should disappear (be implicit).
4.2.4.1 (#750) Changes to the Out Keywords should not cause additions to the In Keywords.

4.2.5 (#667) (GG) Clean up pencil icon and make it a plus, make more space for other features.

4.3 (#665, #618, #613, #610, #609, #608, #600) Insert text should appear over the currently playing media (GG) ...by default (F). D is working on this.

4.4 Possibility to relink original media. Problem: After I renamed a folder, all media did not play any more. It took quite a while till I figured out what the problem was. Warning? (F)
4.4.1 (#751) List of files that aren't found shown at startup instead of fancy relinking, for now. (2009-06-08) do sooner
4.4.2 (#752 added as unassigned for later) Down the road you can choose a folder in this interface and it'll try to find all unlinked media from. (2009-06-08) do later.

4.5 (#716,#717,#718) Pool of everything / All resources : Right mouse on media brings up the option "reveal in finder'. (F)

• Dave says he can do it. 15/6 Dave: "Yeah, no problem."

4.6 (#753 #754)Error logs to be hidden (ie dot files) but accessible via menu.
4.6.1 When there's an error message, internally send mail to a specific address, along with the current mail log
4.6.2 Somebody set up korsakowerrorlogs@… for this

4.7 (#778) The Name column should be the one you right click to get the "Open in SNU Editor" and "Get Info" context menu. (S)

4.8 (#779) Right clicking on a snu in the name column should give the context menu for the snu that was clicked on. (S)

4.9 Need an 'Undo' function (Cmd + Z).

4.10 (#780) Currently selected snu should be indicated in the header of the All Keywords window (S)

4.11 Visual cues on All Keywords should be disabled when there is no SNU Editor open (S)

4.12 (#781) The keyword line should have a "collapse" arrow indicating the collapse status, and that it can be expanded. (S)

4.13 All windows snappable. Not a priority. (S)

4.14 (#782) "Load Example" should have the default name "Circle of Life" (S)

4.15 (#743) There must be a prompt to save unsaved work when quitting.* D and G to talk.

4.16 (#768) Separate in keywords in the Snu Editor by commas (F)

4.17 Scale video on export if larger than largest video playing area

4.18 Investicate the poor video quality on export

4.19 Add font-weight and text-decoration fields in the interfacer for text elements

4.20 Add background-color (including transparent) field in the interfacer for text elements

4.21 (#794) The font chooser in the interfacer should work like usual (F)

4.22 Add the option to duplicate a widget (and it's properties, changing stuff like ids or sequence where applicable)

4.23 Make the preview text come in 2.5 times as fast (make it the time required to display the full preview text)

4.24 Review VLC and check for other options to consider for a Linux version

4.25 Make a French version (after launch, send someone else a copy of the language file)

4.25.1 On ant build we can have it pick the language locale to use for creating binaries

5. Design issues (GUI, look and feel)

5.0 Changes to Main GUI (discussion following on from Matt's 13/6/09 sketch responding to r. 12h)

5.0.1 (#785)(#786) Icons moved to bottom right, spaced out, smaller than Matt's sketch, larger than current version.

5.0.2 Need 'Add Text' icon

5.0.3 Root Folder with 'tree/root' lines - will be gone in next release (D)

5.0.4 (#783)(#784) No top Tab (for now). Project name in header: 'Korsakow - My Project'.

5.0.5 In Name column, show icons.

5.0.6 (#739) In Name column, icon changes to SNU cube when SNUified.

5.0.7 (#705) Bring back Interfaces column.

5.0.8 On rollover, file location appears in status bar at bottom. Low priority.

5.0.9 F to design new icon set. (G and F)

5.0.10 Resource window needs temporary 'Drag Media Here' signposting (M to design as PNG).

5.1 Get rid of the words "Pool of" throughout the application? (M)

5.2 Change 'Possible SNUs' to 'Unused Media'? (M)

5.3 Splash screen for application. Matt to design it and add final licensing text. (M)

5.4 About screen. Matt to add text: credits, release, build, link to site. License info. (M)

5.5 Gabriel to change the 'Lego' SNU icon to the red SNU cube. (M)

• G: Done.

5.6 Preloader.

• F and M are very keen on the new K logo.
• It should appear in the application splash screen (Matt to finalize design), and we would like it to be the Flash preloader for all published K Films. No text, no messages, etc, just the K.
• M has retained someone (Bruno Nadeau) to develop some animated versions of the K for the website banner (most recent sketch here <http://www.brunonadeau.com/korsakow/KBanner2/applet/>). He's also exploring preloader ideas. He's using Processing to create Java applets; Gabriel to help get the final Preloader design into Flash. (M)
• M to check with Bruno re minimum time for local playing. (M + G)

5.7 Apple+w should close windows on Mac. (not the application, just the windows?)

• (D or GG) can take care of this. Apple+w / alt-f4 close all windows, but give warning dialogue on the main window when this happens.

5.8 SNU-editor : RETURN-key should be the same as clicking OK.

• D can make this happen.
• Clicking on X should ask for confirmation if it's a save (ok) or just leave (cancel). Enter is ok in that dialogue, and space is cancel.

5.9 (2009-06-08 S) The interfacer would only list two types of widget, Main Video and Preview Area, and everything else would go into some advanced interface. One of the ways to do this would be to have "buttons" for each item, "Main Video" and "Preview Area" on top, then a bunch below.

5.10 (2009-06-08 S) We'll discuss the if/then and other advanced rules from the SNU editor later.

5.11 (2009-06-16 S) (#733) upgrade context menu when displaying multiple items
5.12 (2009-06-16 S) (#734) improve responsiveness when loading up snu editor (it can take a few seconds)

5.13 (2009-07-06 S) Don't add the 'XXX' '---' to rules by default. If added, it'll override the default. The default is 'XXX' for the first outbound rule (lose all old links) and '---' for all subsequent outbound rules.

6. User Guides for Portal

6.1 Dave to create 2-3 short tutorial videos as soon as the GUI is locked down. A tour of the interface; the process of basic SNUifying; exporting and publishing. (M)

• Asked F to put together some scripts (2009-06-08). Get this first.

6.2 Matt is writing the FAQ: <http://staging.korsakow.ca/tiki-list_faqs.php>. If you have any ideas for FAQable questions, please add them to the 'Final Release Planning' wiki page. (M)

6.3 We need a text-based user guide. Who/how/when? (M)

• Suggest open text-based documentation via wiki. To be built over time.
  • Make major headings based on Florian's scripts (GG or M can work on that).
• Florian suggested a 1:30 video presentation on how to use K.
• Florian also suggests an in depth manual.

7. Wishlist

7.1 One informal comment M received was that if the History widget's info could be saved as a text file, this would effectively make K5 an interesting tool for 'traditional' video and film postproduction: feed in a bunch of clips/scenes (ie snus), add keywords, watch until you got a good sequence, save that history, and import it into say FCP as an EDL. Wow. Might have to be a plugin down the line. (M)

• (2009-06-08 S) There is a history button that copies history to clipboard.

8. Other

8.1 M will begin trademark applications for the K logo and 'Korsakow' in the US and Canada ASAP. Florian already has apps pending in GERMANY. (M) (F)
